With a new introduction by George Page, a poignant reminder of the services of the Adamsons in the cause of conservation. I was confused at her reference to "beating" Elsa when she tracked a donkey, which was a purely natural instinct, and not three pages later, said that they never used force with her. How lucky we are to be able to read about Elsa and appreciate a little slice of the African animal population through the eyes of two people who sincerely loved and understood these creatures better than most people could ever hope to.Illustrated with the same beautiful, evocative photographs that first enchanted the world forty years ago and updated with a new introduction by George Page, former host and executive editor of the PBS series Nature and author of Inside the Animal Mind, this anniversary edition introduces to a new generation one of the most heartwarming associations between man and animal. This is the original first edition of Born Free from 1960, when it was entitled Born Free: A Lioness of Two Worlds.

Joy Adamson's prose can at times be a bit workmanlike though and it's perhaps best to take a break or two when the opportunity arises. I recognize and appreciate Joy Adamson's contributions to naturalism and biology, but at its heart this book is about the irresponsible killing of a lion mother, and then the reckless taming of one of her cubs, raised as a pet, and then booted back into the wild, and I can't condone that. Cloth, housed in a custom 1/4 brown morocco leather and cloth slipcase with a gilt-lettered spine, and a cloth chemise. They are all in monochrome, as the first edition of the book dates from 1960, and this was normal practice for the time. As Joy Adamson put it, their relationship continued "to be one of absolute equality quite different from that between a dog and his master. Born Free Lion Rescue tells the true stories of Bella and Simba, two lions who the charity rescued from appalling lives in captivity. Since the first publication of "Born Free" and its sequels "Living Free" and "Forever Free," generations of readers have been enchanted, inspired and moved by these books' uplifting charm and the remarkable interaction between Joy and Elsa.
