Also included in the package is a hardbound book which includes never-before-seen photos along with extensive liner notes by photographer Joel Bernstein and a fold-out poster. Somehow I bought this fantastic album back around 2010, opened it up and looked at the pretty art, but then didn't get around to listening to it until today. Its guitars cut deeper on the Reprise pressing—particularly the rhythm parts, conveyed with palpable tube-amp heat and buzz. Released in February 1972, Harvest was Neil Young’s third solo album and is one of the most successful and well-loved albums in his long career.

Do yourself and your ears a favour, listen to this remaster on a well set up turntable through a decent sound system and I guarantee you'll have every bit of the best audio experiences to be had bar none. Time has been generous to Harvest, which features more lyrical depth than its outward romanticism may suggest. Though I often consider vinyl to be a bit like wine - worn vinyl has probably been thoroughly enjoyed and played often - you could keep vinyl unplayed or wine unopened but in both cases you don’t enjoy it!I speculated at the time that considering Chris Bellman claimed to be working from the original analogue masters, perhaps they had suffered unduly and were beginning to fade. The band on the album had also played with Neil on Harvest: Ben Keith, Spooner Oldham, Tim Drummond, and Kenny Buttrey. Neil Young, like Bob Dylan, has so influenced so many musicians that it’s natural to focus on him rather than think of other bands. The reverb on Young’s voice sounds more vivid and he is placed more securely out in front of the ensemble. the last two tracks, the deceptively gentle The Needle and the Damage Done and the hypnotic rocker Words (Between The Lines Of Age), predict Tonight’s The Night, Young’s haunted 1975 classic.

Fans of the record will receive a new glimpse into Harvest through the two DVDs included in the box set. Americana - steel, guitar, slide guitar, banjo - stripped down and rebuilt with every jagged edge exposed. The album features many of Neil’s most popular songs, including From Hank To Hendrix, Natural Beauty, Unknown Legend, One Of These Days, and the fan-favorite title track. Neil might've been in the middle of the road here, but you can see the ditch coming with these songs. Young’s fourth solo album remains one of the most beloved in his catalog and is dense with songs that have long-permeated radio waves. I'd always thought the album sounded a little lacking in detail and presence, despite most aspects being top notch. My personal opinion of the most recent vinyl reissue of Harvest (Neil Young Archives) was that it was beautifully presented and also very nicely cut and pressed. The slightly thin sound of his harmonica on the original pressing also benefits from more weight and impact. I’m very late to the Neil Young party, he’s one of those artists I’ve known about but just never really listened to. The first DVD is Harvest Time - a 2-hour, unreleased film shot during the making of Harvest, and includes footage at Neil’s Broken Arrow ranch in Northern California, plus the recording sessions in Nashville and London. On this number one 1972 album, even the singer’s acquired-taste voice comes across smooth and beautiful – the smash Heart of Gold, with steel guitars and Linda Ronstadt’s backup vocals, is by far young’s most commercial-sounding song.
