Jacob's Creek Winery is located in Australia's most famous wine region, the Barossa Valley, in South Africa, 80 km north of Adelaide. Golden honey nut fruit and oak is commercially attractive but it’s not real, a facade over a ripe yet tart wine. In 1847, a young Bavarian immigrant named Johann Gramp planted the Barossa Valley's first commercial Vineyard on the banks of Jacob's Creek. Finishing of the wine in an extremely rare Scotch Whisky barrel which once aged a rare 50 year old single malt Scotch Whisky. This brand-new release sees South Australian Shiraz Cabernet juice fermented first in traditional French and American oak before a second maturation in Caribbean rum barrels.

Plenty of dark fruit, and the oak makes it savoury through the finish, even if the coffeed, grainy tannins are blocky and distracting. Rich flavor profile: The wine has a rich and full-bodied flavor, with notes of ripe blackberry, dark chocolate, and vanilla. Double Barrel Shiraz Has A Full And Generous Palate With A Beguiling Mix Of Sweet Red Fruits And Dark Chocolate Indicative Of Its Origins As Barossa Shiraz.

Very full-bodied and very woody, it has matured in scotch barrels, in addition to the oak barrel, which gives it notes of vanilla that enhance its complexity.

It's certainly an intense wine, the aroma has a hint of Christmas pudding to me with dried fruit and the whiskey note coming to the fore. The result is a combination of rich flavours, creating cocoa and vanilla on the palate from the traditional oak barrels, mixed with rum and raisin flavours and a hint of Christmas cake, thanks to the rum barrels. I’ve banged on about the Double Barrel bit when the first wines were released back in 2014 (read here) so you can start there for some background.
