Description

The hardware has been designed in an intuitive manner, where the volume buttons double as menu selectors and the OLED screen displays playback information accurately. To overcome distortion that comes with an amplified weak signal, the RU6 incoming bit-stream is fixed at full volume, with 9 sets of resistors and switching relays enabling a total of 99 steps of fine volume control within –6dB to 0dB on each resistor set. Safeguard signal integrity makes sure the noise from the reference clock and DSP will not bleed intro amplification circuit. Eventually Cayin developed a high precision resistor array volume control circuit that provides 99 steps volume control through 9 segments of resistors and switching relays.

Following a popular release of R01 which brought their 2-year-old N6ii back into the spotlight, to an unexpected surprise of many audiophiles, Cayin scaled down the R01 design into a small standalone usb dongle with a power to transform your smartphone, tablet, laptop, or another DAP into a hi-res audio player with discrete resistor R-2R Ladder DAC. The Cayin comes standard with a USB-C to USB-C cable, along with a USB-A adapter, but for iPhone users, a lightning cable can be purchased separately. Treble is silky smooth with the impression of being laid back, not too extended but very well behaved without a hint of brightness. Both ends of the audio spectrum extend fairly and there is enough headroom to put in small bands and quartets without compromising separation between instruments. By maintaining the original bit-stream, RU6’s output is free from digital filtering thus the signal sounds more unaltered, being kept in perfect time sequence, minimizing phase issues and jitter.

U18t does present you with a more forward and more revealing tonality, but in pair up with RU6 it sounds less harsh and a lot less fatigue in comparison to some other sources.

To maximize data integrity from the source Cayin devised its own resistor-based volume control network. Attack and decay are very convincing as is the dynamic contrast but then it doesn't have the lighting speed or the boldness and ruthless impact of the KA3. To combat this, Cayin spent 3 months developing a custom resistor volume array that provides 99 steps of volume through 9 segments of resistors and switching relays. One most prominent feature that I find very interesting with RU6, it offers two switchable modes named OS (Oversampling) and NOS (NON Oversampling). That means you can plug it into your laptop, iPad, or phone as well as DAPs and enjoy R-2R decoding. As for battery consumption, I have measured my RU6 on Sony Xperia X Compact (Android 8, 2700 mAH, UAPP bitperfect mode, Low Gain driving TRN VX Pro) and the results yielded 6 hours of continuous play by the time the battery reached 3% (from 100%).

And: 1/ no BT is not a deal breaker - how would you listen to music with the UM Mest and use BT, BT is crippling your music; 2/ the BTR5 is a good dac/amp but it is quite below the level of the UM Mest and the RU6.

Cayin's RU6 is a safe bet for a high-end DAC/Amp dongle with all the flexibility DAC/Amp dongles bring, an excellent foray into R-2R technology as well as into genuinely portable Hi-Fi — without breaking the bank.

Safeguard signal integrity, make sure the noise from reference clock and DSP will not bleed into the amplification circuit. The basic idea of R-2R ladder is a matched pair of two resistors, the first is “R” and the other is “2R” which has twice the value of R. All of the dongles come with great features and amongst them the W2 and the RU6 are the most powerful ones. To achieve 24bit decoding, we need 48 pieces of resistors (23 x R and 25 x 2R), and that’s good for one channel. For example with my TRN VX Pro which is already natively wide sounding, I am hearing effortless headroom of soundstage that can make me forget I am listening to an IEM.That’s how RU6 was born and became a discrete resistor R-2R usb DAC/amp dongle for a portable use with iOS, iPad OS, macOS, Windows 7/8/10, Android mobile and tablets, and DAP devices. Compared to the M11 Plus LTD, the RU6 set in NOS breathes a bit more, has a bigger soundstage and is overall more organic and effortless.
