Ampersand notes that, within a few centuries, the amygdaline race will likely attempt genocide against humanity as well. The main characters are very well laid out and likeable and I enjoyed getting to know them and watch their relationships develop. Soul-Crushing Desk Job: Cora starts the book with a stultifying office job; after she has to drop out of college, she ends up working for a terrible temp firm with equally terrible micromanaging clients. Cora stiffly brushed past the few other people in their cubicles who had decided to work through lunch.

There's something that happens towards the end of the book where it looks like Ampersand might be revealed to be a villain, and it made my heart break. No Historical Figures Were Harmed: According to Ellis, Nils Ortega is functionally based on Julian Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks, although his personality is not. If you like sci-fi, investigation thrillers, aliens, and stories of First Contact going sideways, you will enjoy this. And I'd probably never be able to engage with any of Lindsay's work again either if that had happened as she'd have betrayed me in the worst way. By the time she made it to the elevator, half convinced a couple of FBI agents were waiting in ambush at the exit, she decided to go to the cafeteria on the third floor rather than find lunch anywhere half-decent.

Accidental Kidnapping: After Ampersand fails to pilot Cora into Google's server room, he gets knocked out by an EMP, which Cora mistakes for death. The book was released as an audiobook by Macmillan Audio, with narration by Abigail Thorn and Stephanie Willis. The book ends with the two characters closer than ever, with an undeniable connection that's so akin to love that I couldn't see it any other way. She neither knows nor cares whether her fathers leaks are a hoax, and wants nothing to do with himuntil she learns just how deeply entrenched her family is in the cover-up, and that an extraterrestrial presence has been on Earth for decades. The fan belt was just the last in a long line of events that only tightened the spiral of powerlessness that was coming to define her existence, and by this point, she was getting used to it.To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. She neither knows nor cares whether her father's leaks are a hoax, and wants nothing to do with him - until she learns just how deeply entrenched her family is in the cover-up, and that an extraterrestrial presence has been on Earth for decades.

Pretty much everyone who personally knows Nils describes him as self-absorbed to the point of narcissism.Sol, interrogating Cora on her Entertainingly Wrong understanding of the universe, marvels, " Oh, you sweet summer child".
