She’s a likeable character, and Levin manages to make her sympathetic even as the universal praise for her brave rescue of another little girl from a train crash goes to Janet’s head, and she briefly becomes rather arrogant. I had such a clear vision of what they all looked like, especially Colin who I could have put my book in the freezer for many times! If you’re looking for a slow thriller with exceptional characters and plot (and divine writing) then definitely pick this one up, you won’t be disappointed.

The background characters are just as well written, with Colin making my skin crawl every time he was on the page. But Janet's story isn't quite what it seems, and as events spiral out of control, she soon discovers that coming clean isn't an option. Janet Brown is still suffering from the grief of losing her 7-year-old daughter, Claire, 11 years ago. But the experience was like eating too much sickly chocolate, only very briefly satisfying and making you feel you had better things to do with your time. All the things she’s unable to do with her soul can be achieved with a damp cloth and a splash of bleach. This is an intelligent forensic examination of an abusive relationship and has at its centre a woman who is tormented by her share of responsibility for the death of her young daughter. Then she becomes involved in a train crash, and is feted for saving the life of another little girl. I have a very active imagination and have no problem envisioning my own ending to most of the books I read. The emotional intelligence that underpins this novel is very impressive and I'll be reading more from Charlotte Levin before long, that's for sure.

Next thing we know, Janet seems to be involved in a train accident, and when she wakes up in hospital nobody knows where she was going or why she was on the train, including Janet. And the plot is a tense, unpredictable tale full of twists, turns, revelations, insecurities, deception, grief, manipulation, lies, and tragedy. I found this easy to get into, I didn't warm to any character really, but I did like how they were portrayed. As news spreads of Janet's actions, her story inspires everyone around her, and for the first time her life has purpose and the future is filled with hope. However, the guilt she still carries about a devastating loss that happened eleven years ago, cannot be erased.A deeply human story that manages to be both heartbreaking and hopeful, I highly recommend adding this one to your TBR. I raced through this, desperate to find out how it would be resolved and it definitely didn’t disappoint.

This one had my anxiety levels up for the whole ride, wondering how Janet was ever going to get the life she deserved after miring herself so terribly in untruths and discomfort. As news of Janet's heroism spreads, things begin to spiral out of control, with TV appearances, crowdfunders, and celebrity friends. But all isn't as it seems: can Janet stop come clean and salvage the situation before it's out of her control for good? After yet another argument when Colin does something horrendous, Janet disappears out the back of their house, which backs onto a train track.I really enjoyed Charlotte Levin’s first novel If I Can’t Have You so I was really looking forward to reading this. She's stuck in a rut in life when both her life and routine are shattered, culminating in her being involved in a train crash. The grief and feelings of guilt pour off the page and stay with the reader for some time after the book has been put down.
